From a young age, Robert “Kirk” Langstrom was fascinated by animals and pursued zoology, believing genetic splicing could help cure human disease. This passion only intensified after he began to lose his hearing.
Working with bat DNA, he created a serum and, lacking funding and desperate for progress, tested it on himself. At first, the results seemed promising—until he realised the serum had transformed him into a giant bat-human hybrid.
The Man-Bat existed as a separate entity to Kirk, leaving him with fragmented memories of their violent rampages.
Langstrom has repeatedly attempted to develop a cure, but any success has been temporary, offering only limited control over his transformations.
Impressed by his research and seeking to use the serum in her war against Batman and Gotham, Talia al Ghul kidnapped his wife, Francine, and threatened to kill her unless Kirk perfected and mass-produced the formula.
