This pattern would continue, eventually culminating in his parents discovering body parts hidden in his closet.

Fearing public scandal, Barbara had him undergo treatment with highly dangerous experimental medication. His exposure to these chemicals left him with irreparable brain damage.

James was moved to Arkham Asylum, where he remained in a vegetative state.

Ruin - The Dreaming: Waking Hours

Created by Dream of the Endless in the fields outside the Palace of Dreams, Ruin—so cruelly named—was dismissed as a failure, a pitiful creation unworthy of his maker’s vision. Heartbroken, he obeyed Dream’s command to fulfil his purpose: guiding a young dreamer with a religious calling alongside the angel Jophiel.

Their vision—a dream of Joan of Arc’s martyrdom—collapsed into chaos when Ruin fell in love with the dreamer, twisting the scene into a nightmare of demons and shadows. His emotional breakdown terrified the dreamer and enraged Jophiel.

Believing himself truly cursed to ruin all he touched, Ruin was banished to the Box of Nightmares, where his siblings tormented him. Still, he never forgot the dreamer and vowed to find him again—to show him something beautiful.

With help from the night hag Dora, Ruin attempted to escape the Dreaming through the dreams of Lindy Morris, accidentally trapping her in the Sleeping World. Seeking to right his mistake, he turned to the exiled Jophiel, who reluctantly introduced him to Heather After, a powerful sorceress and descendant of Roderick Burgess.

Not wanting to endanger his new allies—especially after Heather summoned Puck the Hobgoblin—Ruin travelled to World’s End to find Dora. Together, they located Lindy and, despite interference from Brute, Glob, and even Dream himself, Ruin succeeded in returning her safely to the Waking World.

When he faced Dream again, Ruin pleaded to surrender his immortality in exchange for the freedom to love and live as he chose. Intrigued, Dream granted his request but vowed to keep watch over his creation.

No longer a fugitive, Ruin returned to Jophiel and asked to live with him. Though hesitant, the angel agreed, finding Ruin’s sincerity unexpectedly endearing—if somewhat chaotic.

Later, Ruin joined Heather and Jophiel on a mission to Faerie to stop a civil war between loyalists of Titania and Auberon and the usurper Queen Nuala. The mission went off the rails, and Ruin was forced to take a life in self-defence—an act that shattered him. Wracked with guilt, he came to believe he was inherently dangerous, made only to inspire fear.

Crossing from Faerie back to the Dreaming and then the Waking World, Ruin helped Todd rescue Heather and return her safely to New Jersey—where he finally met Ben, the dreamer from long ago.

Stunned to find Ben alive—and even more so to learn his feelings were returned—Ruin took him to the Dreaming, where Ben reassured him that leaving the Church had been his own choice and that Ruin was not a curse, but loved.

When Dream tried to separate them, Ruin stood his ground, calling on Heather for help. After a tense standoff, Dream relented, allowing Ruin to live freely in the Waking World. In a rare act of mercy, he acknowledged that even nightmares have a place in the tapestry of dreams.

Finally free from Dream’s shadow, Ruin began a new life with Ben.

Ben - The Dreaming: Waking Hours

Benedict “Ben” grew up in Old Branch, New Jersey, and was destined for a life in the Catholic Church. To guide him toward that calling, Dream of the Endless sent the angel Jophiel and the nightmare Ruin to create a vision of Joan of Arc’s martyrdom—meant to inspire reflection on eternity and divine purpose.

However, when Ruin fell in love with Ben, he lost control of his powers and nearly destroyed the dream.

Though the vision succeeded in its purpose, Ben couldn’t forget the pain and fear he saw in Ruin’s breakdown. He longed to comfort him, but woke before he could act.

Moved by the dream, and by Ruin, Ben entered the seminary, determined to devote his life to kindness, compassion, and faith. Secretly, he also hoped the nightmare was real—and that they might one day meet again.

Despite his deep faith, Ben eventually left the seminary, realising his feelings for Ruin were stronger than his religious calling. He embraced both his Christianity and his identity as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, striving to live with love and authenticity.

A close friend of Azar, Ben, accompanied her to Heather After’s flat to offer support after the young nurse’s troubling mystical experiences there. During this visit, Ben finally met Ruin in the waking world.

He followed Ruin into the Dreaming, assuring him that leaving the Church had been his own choice—one made freely and without regret—and offering Ruin his first true experience of love and companionship.

When Dream sought to separate them, Ben stood firm, appealing to the Endless’s sense of justice and compassion. He argued that Ruin was not merely a tool but a living, feeling being deserving of love.

After a tense exchange—and a threat of imprisonment from Heather—Dream relented, allowing them to return to Earth.

Back home, Ben and Ruin began a romantic relationship and moved in together, remaining close friends with Lindy Morris, Heather, and Todd.

Todd - The Dreaming: Waking Hours

New to the world of magic, Todd is the kind-hearted, devoted boyfriend of Heather After.

The two met on a dating app, and for their first date, Todd suggested a sports bar he often frequented. When he noticed Heather’s discomfort—rooted in her fear of being targeted and hurt for being trans—he immediately changed the venue to somewhere more comfortable. That small act of kindness marked the start of their relationship.

Though often bewildered by the magical chaos surrounding Heather, Todd stayed open-minded and supportive, standing by her through every twist and turn. He formed a close bond with the young nightmare Ruin, warmly welcoming him into their growing circle of friends.

When Heather was trapped in Faerie, Todd played a crucial role in her return, working with Ruin to bring her home to their New Jersey apartment using a Faerie Seed.

With the crisis behind them, Todd and Heather settled back into normal life. Todd also grew close to Ben—Ruin’s new boyfriend—and Azar, finding camaraderie in their shared inexperience with the magical world.
