After one of Thawne’s descendants was killed by the One-Earth Regime, the time-traveling speedster became trapped in a paradox that erased his future and left him stranded in the present.
Unable to return home, he swore vengeance on Barry Allen, reasoning that if he could not kill his rival, he could still hurt him—both emotionally and physically.
When no news surfaced about Allen after the fall of the Regime, he decided to force his return by joining Gorilla Grodd’s Society. Due to timeline alterations, he was unaware that Grodd had allied with Brainiac and intended to destroy Earth.
To draw the Flash out of hiding, Thawne, Deadshot, and Captain Cold attempted to kill him. When an injured Allen escaped, Thawne pursued him across the country, eventually catching up to him in Gotham.
Defeated, he retreated, vowing to finish their battle the next time they met.
Resenting every member of the Regime, he later targeted Wonder Woman, ambushing her in Metropolis—only to be defeated again.
After learning the truth about Brainiac and Grodd’s plans, he abandoned the Society and went into hiding. Though he hated his current existence, he still wanted to live long enough to see what tomorrow might bring.
